GOVERNMENT ALLOCATES GH¢203 MILLION FOR TEACHER TRAINEE ALLOWANCES IN 2025 BUDGET

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) is pleased to announce that the Government of Ghana has allocated GH¢203 million for the payment of teacher trainee allowances in the 2025 financial year. This allocation was disclosed by the Honourable Minister for Finance, Dr. Ato Cassiel Forson, during the presentation of the 2025 Budget Statement and Economic Policy of Government to Parliament.

In his address, the Minister highlighted the government’s commitment to supporting teacher trainees, stating, “We have allocated GH¢203 million for the payment of Teacher Trainee allowances and another GH¢480 million for Nursing Trainee allowances.” This allocation fulfills a promise made by H.E. John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) 2024 manifesto, which pledged to continue the payment of teacher trainee allowances.

The allowance will benefit all student teachers enrolled in the 47 public Colleges of Education across the country, providing crucial financial support as they pursue their education and training.

Call for National Dialogue on Sustainability

While the allocation is a welcome development, Prof. Ahmed Abdulai Jinapor, Director-General of GTEC, has called for a national dialogue on the sustainability of teacher trainee allowances. Speaking at the 15th Congregation of Akatsi College of Education, Prof. Jinapor emphasized the need to explore the long-term viability of this educational intervention, given its significant impact on public finances.

“We must engage in a constructive conversation about the sustainability of these allowances and how we can ensure that they continue to benefit future generations without overburdening the national budget,” Prof. Jinapor stated.

Next Steps

Following the parliamentary approval of the 2025 budget, GTEC, in collaboration with the Student Loan Trust Fund and other implementing partners, will work diligently to ensure the timely disbursement of the allowances to teacher trainees.

GTEC remains committed to supporting the development of quality education in Ghana and will continue to engage stakeholders to address challenges and improve the effectiveness of educational interventions.
