The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), with sponsorship from Transforming Teaching, Education and Learning (T-TEL), has organized a Tertiary Education Stakeholder Engagement on the ongoing Senior High School (SHS) Reforms to ensure that tertiary institutions are well-prepared to receive graduates from the reformed system.
The engagement, which forms part of a nationwide sensitization exercise covering five zones namely Tamale, Kumasi, Ho, Accra, and Takoradi has already taken place in Tamale, Kumasi and Takoradi with the next expected to take place in Accra on the 17th of November, 2025 and Ho on the 19th of November, 2025.
The University for Development Studies (UDS), Tamale hosted the first event on the 3rd of November, 2025. The second event at Kumasi was hosted at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi on the 5th of November and Takoradi Technical University (TTU) hosted the Western/Central Zonal session of the engagement on the 7th of November, 2025, drawing participants from universities and tertiary institutions across the Northern, Upper East, Upper West, Savannah, North East, Ahafo, Bono, Bono East, Ashanti, Western, Western North, and Central Regions.

The purpose of the exercise was to raise awareness among key university stakeholders such as Pro-Vice Chancellors, Provosts, Deans, Directors and Quality Assurance Officers, about the skills, competencies, and 21st-century values that learners are expected to acquire under the new SHS curricula developed by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA).

In his opening remarks, Prof. Samuel Ofori O. Bekoe, representing NaCCA, outlined the goals and structure of the new curriculum, emphasizing its focus on competency-based learning, problem-solving, and the cultivation of critical thinking and collaboration skills among learners.
A series of presentations and discussions explored the implications of the reforms for university entry requirements, pedagogy, and assessment practices.

Participants engaged in an open forum to share perspectives on how universities can adjust their instructional and evaluation approaches to ensure continuity in skill development from secondary to tertiary education.

Speaking on behalf of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, Prof. Augustine Ocloo reiterated GTEC’s commitment to supporting institutions in aligning their curricula and quality assurance mechanisms with the national education reforms. He acknowledged the collaboration of GTEC and NaCCA in strengthening the education value chain from pre-tertiary to higher education and urged the universities to take part in the conversation.
The engagement was also supported by the management of the aforementioned universities, led by the Vice Chancellor or his Deputy, who warmly welcomed participants and reaffirmed their dedication to contributing to national educational transformation.
The stakeholder engagement marked another milestone in Ghana’s efforts to create a seamless transition between secondary and tertiary education. By equipping tertiary leaders with a deeper understanding of the new SHS curriculum, the initiative aims to ensure that universities and colleges can effectively nurture the next generation of learners equipped with the skills, character, and values needed for national development in the 21st century.
Nearly 250 participants have been engaged so far. The next events will take place at the Auditorium of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) on the 17th of November, 2025 and the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) on the 19th of November, 2025
