WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
The Graduate Employability Study is a project being undertaken by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) with support from Transforming Teaching, Education and Learning (T-TEL) and Mastercard Foundation.
The study is to inform policy decisions and strategies on education and training in tertiary education institutions (TEIs). It is expected to be undertaken biennially.
This study will include:
(1) an Employer skills survey to evaluate the skill sets of graduates and the skills gap in the labour market.
(2) an institutional survey to evaluate the employability strategies of tertiary education institutions (TEIs).
It is expected that the study will contribute to the national discourse on the relevance of education offered in tertiary education institutions and provide the bases for curricula reviews in some disciplines in tertiary education institutions. The intended outcome is to improve the employability of Ghanaian graduates.
The Graduate Employability Study commenced in May 2022 is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
THE GOAL
The study aims at assessing the skill needs of employers and the strategies employed by tertiary education institutions to facilitate the development of a national employability skills framework and integrate employability into education and training in tertiary education.
Thus, the study seeks to:
· identify skill shortage vacancies in the labour market;
· identify the skills gaps in the labour market;
· evaluate the employability strategies of tertiary education institutions (TEIs); and
· subsequently develop a national employability skills framework.
EXPECTED OUTCOMES
The outcomes of the study will inform the type and quality of the programme to be offered by TEIs in Ghana. It is also expected that the outcomes of the study would foster the integration employability skills into the programmes of tertiary education institutions and make their graduates more employable.
HOW WILL THE STUDY BE CONDUCTED AND WHO IS INVOLVED?
The study will adopt a mixed-method approach to collect data from a sample of five thousand (5,000) Employers and forty (40) Tertiary Education Institutions across the country.
Field Data collection officers will be deployed across the country to conduct interviews and administer the questionnaire. The data collection will be aided by a computer-assisted personal interview (CAPI) tool.
WE COUNT ON THE COOPERATION OF ALL STAKEHOLDERS, ESPECIALLY EMPLOYER/ ESTABLISHMENTS TO MAKE THIS STUDY A SUCCESS.
