The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) in collaboration with Transforming Teacher Education and Learning (T-TEL) has organised a 2-day workshop for Council Members of the Colleges of Education within the northern sector of Ghana. The purpose of the workshop was mainly to build the capacity of the Council Members on the governance structure of the tertiary education system and the regulatory framework within which they function.
The workshop was held on Monday July 31, 2023 and Tuesday August 1, 2023 at the Modern City Hotel in Tamale. Present were Council Members from Tamale College of Education, Gambaga College of Education, NJ Ahmadiya College of Education, St. John Bosco College of Education, Bagabaga College of Education, St. Vincent College of Education, Gbewaa College of Education, McCoy College of Education, St. John Bosco College of Education and EP College of Education, Bimbila.
The Director-General of GTEC, Prof. Mohammed Salifu, in his opening remarks said the Commission found it necessary to organise the workshop for Council Members of all the Colleges of Education within the country to define their roles and functions and also draw a clear line of distinction between Council and Management of the Colleges. He also stated that the workshop was to provide a platform to discuss challenges that confronts Council in supervising the Colleges. He concluded by saying that the Commission will extend the workshop to Council Members of Colleges in other parts of the country.
Resource Persons who led discussions included Dr. Paul Effah, Former Executive Secretary of National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE); Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, Deputy Director-General of GTEC; Dr. Edmund Alangdong, Head of Policy and Planning, GTEC; Mr. Jerry Sarfo, Head of Institutional Support and Coordination, GTEC; Dr. Evans Takyi Ankomah-Asare, Head of Compliance, GTEC; Mrs. Sandra Amoah, Head of Budget, GTEC; Mr. Francis Obeng (CA), Acting Director of Finance, University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC); Mr. Anthony Debre, Head of GETFUND Projects at GTEC and Mr. Kwaku Boateng, Head of Quality Assurance, GTEC.
