The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), in partnership with the African Centres of Excellence (ACE) Project has organised the maiden National Tertiary Education Conference (NTEC) 2024 under the theme “Transforming Tertiary Education in Ghana: Dialogue, Policy and Practice.” The event brought together key stakeholders from regulatory bodies, heads and representatives of tertiary education institutions, policymakers, researchers and industry leaders.

The three-day conference, held at the Cedi Conference Centre of the University of Ghana, from November 5-7, 2024, featured a robust lineup of distinguished speakers addressing critical topics on Curriculum Development, Pedagogy, Quality Assurance, Internationalization, Research Development, as well as Regulation in Tertiary Education. The conference also marked the 10th anniversary of the ACE project, with leaders from various ACE Centres showcasing their significant achievements over the past decade.

The Director-General of GTEC, Professor Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai in his welcome address said the NTEC shall serve as a vital platform for dialogue and collaboration, which is aimed at paving the way for innovative solutions and strategic policies to enhance the quality and impact of tertiary education in Ghana. He added that the conference reiterates the commitment of GTEC in fostering an inclusive and progressive educational environment that meets the evolving needs of students and the nation.

The Honorable Minister for Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, who represented the President of the Republic, in his opening remarks highlighted the significant innovations introduced in the pre-tertiary education sector, particularly in curriculum development and the modernization of secondary institutions.

Dr. Adutwum emphasized the necessity for tertiary education institutions to embrace and integrate these innovations into their own curricula. He underscored the importance of preparing for the next generation of students, ensuring they benefit from the advancements being made in the pre-tertiary education landscape. “The call to action aims to create a seamless educational experience that equips students with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in an evolving academic and professional environment” he added.

Other notable figures who were present include Professor Kwame Boafo-Arthur, Board Chair of GTEC; Professor Francis K. E Nunoo, Deputy Director-General of GTEC, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, Vice Chancellor of University of Ghana, Professor Gordon Awandare, Pro Vice Chancellor of University of Ghana and Emeritus Professor Ernest Aryeetey, former vice chancellor of university of Ghana.
