The newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Professor Christian Agyare, has paid a courtesy call on the Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), Professor Jinapor, as part of efforts to strengthen the collaborative relationship between the University and the Commission.

The visit created an opportunity for the two institutions to discuss issues relating to quality assurance, institutional development, science and technology education, and the continued advancement of higher education in Ghana.
Speaking during the meeting, the 13th Vice-Chancellor of KNUST expressed appreciation to GTEC for its continued support and guidance to the University over the years. Professor Agyare noted that the University was placing strong emphasis on the adoption of artificial intelligence to remain responsive to the needs of its stakeholders, and indicated KNUST’s readiness to engage the Commission on emerging technology matters as it rolls out related initiatives. He further underscored the University’s recognition of GTEC’s role in safeguarding quality and standards across Ghana’s tertiary education sector, and reaffirmed KNUST’s commitment to adhering to the advice, guidance and directives of the regulator as it works to deliver quality education and contribute meaningfully to national development.
In his response, the Director-General of GTEC congratulated the Vice-Chancellor on his appointment and encouraged the University to continue playing its leading role in science, technology, engineering and innovation. He commended KNUST for setting the pace in shaping the architecture of progress among universities in Ghana, and urged the Vice-Chancellor to leverage the mutual ties between the two institutions for the continued advancement of the University.
The Director-General further appealed to KNUST to consider introducing and expanding programmes in science and technology that respond to Ghana’s current and future development needs. He observed that, as an institution whose name and mandate are firmly anchored in science and technology, KNUST bears a significant responsibility to produce the human capital required to drive innovation, industrialisation and technological advancement in the country. He encouraged the University to explore emerging areas of science, technology and innovation, and to develop programmes that are responsive to the evolving demands of industry and the national economy.

Another key matter discussed at the meeting was KNUST’s migration to the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Database (IPPD2). The Vice-Chancellor appealed to GTEC to support the University in its engagement with the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department on the migration process, explaining that a smooth transition to IPPD2 was critical to strengthening the University’s payroll and financial management systems and to addressing some of the financial management challenges currently confronting the institution.
Responding to the appeal, the Director-General acknowledged the concern and assured the University of GTEC’s readiness to engage the relevant stakeholders, including the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department, to explore ways of supporting KNUST through the migration process.

The meeting reaffirmed the importance of continued collaboration between GTEC and KNUST in promoting quality, accountability and innovation within Ghana’s tertiary education sector.
Both institutions expressed their commitment to sustaining a strong working relationship, with KNUST continuing to meet the required regulatory standards while contributing significantly to the development of science, technology and human capital for Ghana and beyond.
