GTEC Holds Inaugural AMIS Stakeholder Engagement Workshop

On Tuesday, June 2, 2026, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) held its first Accreditation Management Information System (AMIS) stakeholder engagement workshop at the GTEC Auditorium in Accra. The event, themed “Enhancing Accreditation Processes Through Digital Innovation,” brought together representatives from accredited tertiary institutions nationwide to share their experiences with the AMIS since its launch in 2024.

Introduced by GTEC to digitize programme accreditation and reaccreditation, AMIS aims to render these processes entirely paperless. The workshop served as a platform to gather user feedback, including criticisms, challenges, and recommendations, to guide future improvements to the system.

In his opening address, the Director General of GTEC, Professor Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, commended participants for their attendance and acknowledged that AMIS was developed to facilitate seamless, paperless engagements between the Commission and tertiary institutions. He highlighted that the workshop would empower institutional representatives to return to their respective institutions and train their staff on the system. Professor Jinapor encouraged stakeholders to freely share ideas, offer constructive criticism, and make recommendations to help improve the system. He also urged participants to use the workshop as an opportunity to network and collaborate with one another.

Mr. Benjamin Hackman, Acting Head of MIS at GTEC, delivered a presentation on the overview of AMIS, highlighting its objectives and achievements since implementation. He took participants through key features and functionalities, stressing that AMIS is designed to make accreditation application processing seamless, secure, and fair. Mr. Hackman also provided a brief analysis of the financial benefits the system has delivered to institutions. The presentation was followed by a question-and-answer session, during which he addressed several participant inquiries in detail.

Mr. Hussein Alhassan, a member of the MIS Department at GTEC, conducted a practical demonstration of the system. He showed participants how institutions can register programmes, add staff and users, upload curricula and physical facility information, pay invoices, and respond to panel comments all within the AMIS. Following the demonstration, attendees raised various concerns and challenges, which the GTEC team addressed.

During the plenary session, users shared their experiences with the AMIS, highlighting on interface improvements, process efficiency, compliance tracking, and technical performance challenges. Professor Emmanuel Asamoah, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), acknowledged the system’s benefits but suggested that the certificate acquisition process should be made end-to-end encrypted. He further proposed that certificates be automated on the platform, eliminating the need for institutions to visit the Commission for hard copies. Professor Wahab, Director of Quality Assurance at the Ghana Communications Technology University (GCTU), called for greater improvements in the programme development stage. He recommended that AMIS allow users to upload an entire programme developed offline directly onto the system.

Regarding financial concerns, one participant proposed that institutions be allowed to access invoices for programmes they can partially pay for, even if the payment does not cover all registered programmes. In response, Professor Jinapor advised institutions against submitting programmes they lack the financial capacity to cover. Another participant suggested merging receipts for individual programme payments into a single invoice to reduce the volume of paper documents submitted for payment processing.

At the close of the workshop, the Commission assured participants that all concerns and recommendations would be carefully reviewed, and that necessary improvements would be implemented to enhance the system’s functionality and overall user-friendliness. In his closing remarks, the Director of Accreditation, Mr. Saaka Sayuti, reaffirmed GTEC’s commitment to continuous innovation and stakeholder engagement. He thanked the participants for their valuable contributions and brought the event to a successful close.
