UMAT Vice-Chancellor and management Pay Courtesy Call on GTEC Director-General

The newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Prof Bernard  Kumi-Boateng,  paid a courtesy call on the Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, on Wednesday, 7th October, 2026 , to formally introduce himself and seek the Commission’s support and guidance in advancing the university’s mandate.

The Registrar of the University, Dr. Theophilus Andoh-Robertson, in his opening remarks indicated the importance of the visit and how the Chairman of Council. Prof. Goski Alabi, had wanted to be part of the delegation. The Vice-Chancellor subsequently expressed his commitment to working closely with GTEC to strengthen the university’s operations and ensure that its academic programmes meet the required standards of quality and relevance.

He acknowledged the important regulatory role of GTEC in Ghana’s tertiary education sector and sought the Director-General’s guidance on matters relating to accreditation, institutional development and the delivery of quality higher education and thanked the Director-General for his involvement in the Kenyase Campus of UMaT.

In his response, Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai congratulated the Vice-Chancellor on his appointment and encouraged him to uphold the Commission’s regulatory requirements, particularly in the area of programme accreditation and quality assurance.

Given UMaT’s specialised mandate in mining, engineering, technology and related fields, Prof. Abdulai further encouraged the Vice-Chancellor to promote high-quality, industry-relevant education that responds to the needs of Ghana’s mining sector and the broader national economy.

He underscored the importance of producing graduates equipped with the requisite technical knowledge, practical skills and professional competencies to contribute meaningfully to the country’s industrial development.

The Director-General reaffirmed GTEC’s commitment to providing the necessary regulatory guidance and support to tertiary institutions in fulfilling their mandates, while stressing that institutional growth must be pursued in accordance with established standards and quality assurance requirements.

The visit provided an opportunity for both institutions to reaffirm the importance of collaboration in strengthening Ghana’s tertiary education system and positioning UMaT as a Centre of excellence in mining, engineering, technology and related disciplines. The Vice Chancellor was accompanied by the Ag. Pro-VC of the University, the Registrar and Director of Finance.
