The newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University for Development Studies (UDS),Professor Mohammed Muniru Iddrisu accompanied by members of the University’s senior management, paid a courtesy call on the Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, at the Commission in Accra on Tuesday, 21st July, 2026.
The visit provided an opportunity for the University’s leadership to express its appreciation for GTEC’s continued support and recognition of UDS’s contribution to Ghana’s tertiary education sector. The delegation also reaffirmed the University’s commitment to working closely with the Commission in promoting higher quality education.
The Vice-Chancellor stated that UDS is determined to position itself as a world-class university and appealed for GTEC’s continued guidance and support in achieving this vision. He acknowledged the Commission’s indispensable role in regulating Ghana’s tertiary education landscape and commended the Director-General for his exemplary leadership and commitment to strengthening quality assurance and institutional governance across the sector.
The Vice-Chancellor further assured the Director-General of the University’s readiness to work collaboratively with GTEC to ensure full compliance with regulatory requirements and to enhance the quality and competitiveness of its academic programmes.
In his remarks, Prof. Abdulai congratulated the Vice-Chancellor on his appointment and reaffirmed GTEC’s commitment to supporting public universities in fulfilling their mandates while maintaining high standards of quality, relevance and accountability.
The Director-General also expressed his condolences to the Vice-Chancellor, the University community and the people of Dagbon following the passing of the Overlord of Dagbon, acknowledging the significant loss to the Kingdom and the nation.
Prof. Abdulai encouraged the Vice-Chancellor and his management team to adopt an inclusive leadership approach by engaging all stakeholders in the governance of the University. He noted that collaboration, consultation and prudent decision-making would be essential in advancing the University’s strategic goals and maintaining institutional harmony.
Touching on the future direction of UDS, the Director-General observed that although the University’s new Act provides broad academic and institutional flexibility, it would be beneficial for the University to establish a distinctive niche that would make it nationally and internationally recognised for excellence in a particular area. He encouraged the University’s leadership to identify and strategically develop such areas of comparative advantage.
As part of GTEC’s commitment to supporting the University, Prof. Abdulai assured the Vice-Chancellor of the Commission’s readiness to work with UDS to regularise all outstanding unaccredited academic programmes by facilitating their review and subsequent submission for accreditation in accordance with established regulatory requirements.
On the University’s Yendi Campus, the Director-General indicated that the Commission would be prepared to consider its accreditation once the University had addressed the outstanding infrastructure requirements, particularly the provision of a reliable water supply system and a standby power generator.
The meeting concluded with both institutions reaffirming their shared commitment to strengthening collaboration in promoting quality, accessible and globally competitive tertiary education in Ghana.
